Kamarpukur is famous for being the birthplace of the world famous saint & philosopher Shri Ramakrishna Dev. It is a small & beautiful village located 45 Kms. away from Tarakeswar town & comes under the Arambagh subdivision in Hooghly District of West Bengal. In this village, Shri Ramakrishna was born & has spent a great phase of his early life. The Kamarpukur Ramakrishna Math & Mission has made Kamarpukur as a famous spiritual tourism destination. Apart from that there are several temples in & around this village which attracts so many tourists for pilgrimage. Kamarpukur still retains the charm of the bygone era of rural Bengal with its mud huts, ponds, old buildings amidst the lush green nature. Kamarpukur is situated just 6 Kms. away from Jayrambati village (The birthplace of the Holy Mother Sarada Devi). Kamarpukur and Jayrambati are jointly considered as one of the holiest pilgrimage destinations of Bengal.

Weather around the year:

The winter is quite comfortable and the temperature ranges from 10 degree to 20 degree Celsius but the summers are quite hot & humid and the temperature sometimes rises up to 40 degree Celsius.

Best Time to Visit:

You can visit this place throughout the year but, January to March & September to December are the best times to visit Kamarpukur.

How to Reach:

By Air: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, at a distance of about 100 Km, is the nearest airport of Kamarpukur & Jayrambati. From the airport one can hire pre-paid taxis or other vehicle to reach Kamarpukur (at a distance of about 98 Km.) or Jayrambati (at a distance of about 103 Km.) in around 3 hours. The road conditions are pretty good.

By Train: Kamarpukur does not have its own active railway station. Tarakeswar railway station at a distance of about 45 Kms. from Kamarpukur is the nearest railhead from Kamarpukur. Plenty of local and express trains are available from Howrah railway station near Kolkata, those take you to Tarakeshwar in one & half hour. At Tarakeswar railway station, several taxi and bus services are available to go to Kamarpukur and Jairambati comfortably.

By Road: Kamarpukur is about 105 Kms. away from Kolkata & take around 3 hrs. time to reach by roadway via Howrah–Dankuni-Arambagh route. Frequent bus services are available at Kolkata which are connecting Kamarpukur & Jayrambati with Kolkata. In the morning, the CSTC buses are available from Esplanade Bus Terminus (Sahid Minar) at Kolkata approximately in every one and half hour.

From Burdwan (Bardhaman) one can reach Kamarpukur after travelling 60 Kms. by road comfortably in just one and half hour. Private and state buses for the route of Burdwan to Ghatal & Burdwan to Haldia which passes through Kamarpukur are available in every hour.

There are plenty of spiritual tourist spots for sightseeing which can be visited at any time of the day.

Ramakrishna Math (Temple), Ramakrishna Mission, The Ancestral House of Sri Ramakrishna, Temple of Sri Ramakrishna on his birth place, Living room of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Raghuvira Temple, Sri Ramakrishna’s public meeting place & his Mango tree, Yogi’s Shiva Temple,  Haldar Pukur (The holy pond where Shri Ramakrishna used to take his daily bath), Palace of Manik Raja, The Primary School of the Lahas, Gopeswar Shiva Temple,  House of Sitanath Pyne, Dhani Kamarani’s Birth Place and Temple, Birth Place of Chinu Shankhari, Mukundapur Shiva Temple, Budhui Moral Cremation Ground,  Dargah of Ismail Guji are some of the major visiting spots in Kamarpukur that are most frequently visited by the tourists. The wonderful & charming evening prayer in the Ramakrishna temple is a worth experiencing event for everyone.

Jayrambati (6 Km. away), Joypur Forest (35 Km. away), Gangani The Grand Canyon of Bengal (44 Km. away) & the famousTeracotta Temple town Bishnupur (47 Km. away), are the most popular nearby destinations around Kamarpukur. The surrounding villages of Anur, Phului Shambazar, Sarati Mayapur, Koalpara, Kayapat & Sihar can also be visited from here.

Where to Shop:

In The Kamarpukur Market all types of shops are available starting from sweet shops to accessories and as well as garments. In earlier days, the hookah pipes of ebony, yarns, towels, cloths were used to be exported from Kamarpur to Kolkata.

How to Get around:  

Auto rickshaw, Cycle rickshaw & Cycle van are available to take you from one place to another for local sightseeing.

Must Try Dishes:

The Kamapukur Math serves free lunch and dinner as ‘prashad’ which are not only delicious but has a great significance for all the devotees. You will need to collect the lunch coupon latest by 11.15 am and dinner coupons latest by 6.30. Tourists may also try the local sweets like Jilapi and Nabat.

Where to Stay:

Staying inside the Ramakrishna Math complex is an experience in itself as it offers a chance to spend a few days amidst holy and spiritual atmosphere. The Math owns two guest houses for the devotees.  But to get accommodations one needs to book two three months before his visit.

Some of the othe lodges in Kamarpukur which provide comfortable accommodations are The Relax Lodge , Kamarpukur Lodge, Gadadhar Lodge and there are also two hotels in the area where the accommodation costs are relatively cheaper.

Travel Tips:

It will take around a full day to cover the local tourist spots in Kamarpukur only. But there are more than 20 different tourist spots in & around Kamarpukur (including Jayrambati). So, if any one wants to visit all of them then it will take at least two days to cover the entire Kamarpukur & Jayrambati.
