“Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary” also known as “CKBS” located at Narendrapur of South 24 Parganas District in West Bengal. Basically it is situated at the southern part of greater Kolkata and near “Narendrapur Ramkrishna Mission”. This is also known as “Kayal er Bagan”. This place is quite popular among the Bird watchers & Bird Photographers. This garden is famous for the availability of wide variety of birds, butterflies, ferns and orchids. This is Sanctuary, originally given the status in year 1982. Govt. of West Bengal took the initiative to make it open to the public and acquired it from private owners in October, 2005. This was an honour to renowned sculptor “Mr. Chintamoni Kar”, who had fought relentlessly for many years to obtain the status of Sanctuary for the ‘Kayal er Bagan’.
“Chintamani Kar Wildlife Sanctuary” is the home of a number of bird species, which include Common Hawk Cuckoo, Streak-throated Woodpecker, Emerald Dove, Crested Serpent Eagle, White-throated Fantail and Large-tailed Nightjar and many more. Some rare species include Tickells Thrush, Slaty-legged Crake, Scarlet-backed Flower Pecker, Wood Pecker, Scaly Thrush, Little Spider hunter, Grey-headed Fish Eagle and Blue-throated Flycatcher. Moreover the sanctuary is also a home to a number of small wildlife, like Civet Cat, Jungle Cat, Jackal, Monitor Lizard and others. During the winter you will find plenty of Butterflies in this sanctuary.
How to Reach:
It is situated in the district of South 24-Parganas of West Bengal. The site lies close from the ‘Rath tala’ Bus stop. EM Bypass is the ideal route to follow for reaching the destination. The sanctuary is located at a distance of 10 km. from Ruby General Hospital. Auto-rickshaws and buses are also found from Garia. You can also travel by private buses that halt at ‘Rath tala’. You also can avail the Auto rickshaw or Bus just outside the “Garia” Metro Station to reach at your destination.
Best Time to Visit:
You can visit the place any time of the year but the best time to visit is between spring and winter.
Sanctuary hours: 7:00 am to 5:00 pm throughout the year.
Entry Fees: Rs. 15 per head.
What to do:
Carry your binoculars cameras with yourself as you will get a wonderful opportunity to capture various species of birds and animals within one frame. This sanctuary is a great place for watching different species of birds and enjoying nature walk.
You can go to “Bhaskar Bhavan” which is just beside the sanctuary .You can also visit “Science City” and “Nicco Park” while on your return way to home.
Where to Stay: There is no lodging facility at this Bird Sanctuary. It can be visited from Kolkata a day out trip.
As there are no hotels nearby to spend the night it is best for day trips and it is preferable to take your own food. You must wear covered shoe (not slipper / sandal) in order to protect yourself from insect bite. Inside the Sanctuary, please follow the rules & instructions declared by the authority.
