It is a traditional folk festival & fair which is very popular in the North 24 Parganas along with some other parts of Bengal as well. It is also known as Nil Puja & Charak-er Mela (in Bengali). Hindus from North 24 Parganas celebrate this occasion in the month of Chaitra (Choitro in Bengali) which is the last month in the Hindu calendar. People believe that the festival is a symbol of prosperity and it eliminates all the misfortunes and sufferings of life. The puja is mostly focused on Lord Shiva who is known as Mahadev in the Hindu religion. This festival takes place during the evening of “Chaitra Sankranti” and the preparations begin over a month in advance which gives us an idea about how grand the festival is.
