Shankarpur is a virgin beach located 14km away from digha in East Medinipur district of West Bengal. The calm and secluded beach is the main attraction of sankarpur besides the Shankarpur Fishing Harbour Project. The beach is fringed with casuarinas and eucalyptus trees and does not draw the madding crowds like nearby Digha.

Weather around the year:

The summers are warm with the temperatures ranging between 24 ° C to 40 C. But the sea breeze is quite soothing so one doesn’t feel too hot. The monsoon lasts form June till September. During winter, which lasts from December to February the maximum temperature rises to 28degree Celsius and the lowest is about 10 degree Celsius.

Best time to visit:

The best time to visit Shankarpur is during winter as the weather remains most pleasant during that time. But tourist can visit Sankarpur at any time between July to December as the sea breeze never lets the temperature to rise above a certain level and a moderate temperate prevails throughout the year.

How to reach:

Buses go to Shankarpur from Dharamtala/ Esplanade bus stand, Kolkata. You can board any bus going toward Digha and get down at ‘Choddo mile (14 mile)’ stoppage, from where the sea beach is just a 15min ride by car.

You have to take the national highway if you want to drive and take left from Choddo mile (just before Ram Nagar) to reach the Shankarpur beach.

Trains goes to Digha, are also available from howrah but you will need to hire a car from the Digha railway station to go to the desired destination.

Must see places:

Mandarmoni sea beach is a 45 mins walk from Shankarpur.

What to do:

Shankarpur is the best place for relaxing amidst the peaceful and calm nature. Photography lovers can capture mesmerising shots of the sea beach at one side and the dense casuarinas and eucalyptus forest on the other.

Where to shop:

Other than a few tea stalls in the beach not much shops are available at Shankarpur. One can buy beautiful shells of varied shapes and hues as souvenirs which are sold by the local villagers at a princely sum of two rupees.

How to get around:

Other than the cars provided by hotel and a few rickshaws not much transport options are available.

Must try dishes:

Fried fish and coconut water are available in the small shacks on the beach.

Hotel Sandy Bay serves good Bengali cuisine. Their sea foods – prawns, pomfret, bhetki, parshey and vegetarian food such as mochar ghonto, aloo posto, aloor dum , kashmiri aloo dum and cholar daal deserves special mention .

Where to stay:

To maintain the tranquility of the place not much hotels have been constructed but some of the good hotels available here are: Hotel Nest, Near Beach Hotel and Hotel Sandy Bay.

Within a budget of Rs. 3000 one can have a memorable weekend trip at a good hotel as the price ranges from Rs. 700 to 2000 per day as per availability.

Travel tips:

There are no life guards available on the beach, so it is better to keep yourself near to the shoreline & don’t go far away into the sea.
